WHAT IS A MALA?:
A mala is a beaded necklace traditionally used during meditation or prayer. The word “mala” is Sanskrit for meditation garland.
They are always made with exactly 108 beads, like this one.
Why 108, you ask?
108 has significance in many different cultures:
Beads of wood or gemstones are chosen based on the individual’s needs. In example, you may rose quartz for love and comfort or amethyst for anxious thoughts or boosts in creativity. Each bead is strung onto silk thread, and then hand knotted into place, which can take several hours to complete by hand. Traditionally, mala neckalces were used during meditation or prayer, an affirmation repeated as they counted each of the 108 beads.
